Shopping Smart: Where to Splurge and Save in Shenyang
There's something for every type of shopper in the city, from bargain-basement market stalls to luxury malls. Here's where to start!
It's not called 'shopping heaven' for nothing! At the city centre, Taiyuan Street boasts more than 200 shops, including the must-visit Zhongxing Commercial Plaza, which houses the largest selection of cosmetics in the city. More than 400,000 people shop along Taiyuan Street every day -- so you can't go wrong. Mixed in with international brands are old Chinese shops that have been serving customers for more than 100 years. Make sure you stop by Qiulin Foods for a traditional Chinese dessert and the clothing market, Shishang Dixia, to hunt for bargains.
Another shopping mecca is Wuai Market, which is only a fraction less popular than Taiyuan Street with 300,000 customers a day. Its market stalls cover a vast area and you'll find everything from clothing to homewares, gifts, beauty products and appliances.
If you're searching for souvenirs, keep an eye out for Shenyang's artists, who use traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy techniques to create delicate embellished scrolls.
