Shenyang’s Fish Festival is Must-Visit
February sees Shenyang’s Fish Festival in full swing, and is a terrific treat to see.
So what does the festival celebrate? It marks the official start of fishing season at Shenyang’s Wolong Lake. Locals in Shenyang hold the festival, known officially as the Daliao Culture and Winter Fishing Festival, to honour the lake and it’s rich bounty of fish.
Go there during the festival and you’ll find parades, processions and snow carvings, locals dressed in traditional costume and actors performing ancient rites. Bright costumes and billowing flags stand out stunningly bright against the lake’s snowy backdrop and looks truly breathtaking.
One of the highlights for me as a food lover was watching fishermen bury deep beneath the snow to fish the icy waters below. Another was a huge bubbling cauldron used to cook an enormous fish stew for the crowds. This proved a good place to warm up, and a steaming bowl of the stew was a piping hot treat.
It felt fantastic getting so close to traditional custom and culture. Make sure you pay the fishing festival a visit if you are in Northeast China, but remember, wrap up extra warm!
