Shenyang Winter Curiosities
My guests are a resourceful bunch. Most arrive in Shenyang knowing exactly what they want to do and where they want to go. Apart from the tourist attractions in Shenyang, there’s a curious hobby that locals enjoy, particularly in winter when options become more limited. So if you’re wondering what you can do to get a taste of the locals’ daily lives, try going to a bathhouse.
Strictly speaking, it’s not just a bathhouse because there is so much more you can do there. It’s not a spa either, because while they offer massages and other forms of pampering, the setting of a bathhouse is quite different – many parents will bring their kids along for a family fun day. In essence it is a community entertainment centre which combines bathing facilities, heated pools, spas, eateries and, in some cases, children’s playrooms and TV rooms. Guests can access most of the facilities by paying a one-off entrance fee. It’s not hard to imagine why business booms in winter – it’s a rendezvous for folks to meet up with friends for a bit of chitchat and combat the winter chill.
There’s actually a bathhouse called Yonglihui right across from my hotel. Speak to my team if you want more details!
