Sniff our Penang’s Best Durians
The first time I smelt durian I wasn’t sure what to make of it… slightly cheesey, a little sour? Once I’d gotten used to its custardy texture and sweet, exotic flavour, however, I found I couldn’t get enough.
Now, whenever I’m in Penang, I make sure to hunt down the locally grown fruit for an extra special treat. No other durians taste as good as Penang durians, bulging, ripe and fresh from the tree. If you are making a stop here, take a trip up to a local plantation, where you’ll learn about durian varieties and their different flavours as well as how to select the tastiest fruits.
My hotel is also running an all-you-can-eat durian buffet for fruit fans booking two nights. We’ll whisk you away by trishaw from my hotel on a tour that ends at one of Penang’s best durian stalls. Sightseeing and snacking on durian in one awesome trip? I can’t imagine a better way to get closer to local Penang custom than this!
Dedicated durian fans should ask my team if they know where you can sample a durian type called Butter. It's a locally grown speciality rarely found outside of Penang.
