Quirky Penang: Project Occupy Beach Street
If you’re ever in Penang on a Sunday, do make a trip to Beach Street, or Lebuh Pantai, to visit one of Georgetown’s popular Sunday markets. Running on a car-free concept, Project Occupy Beach Street opens every Sunday on Beach Street and neighbouring main thoroughfare, which will be closed from traffic to provide space for a family-friendly carnival divided into four zones:
Lebuh Pantai, the eco-friendly zone
This zone is essentially what you’ll expect in a street market, with local businesses selling delicious healthy food and curious eco-friendly knick-knacks. There will also be car boot sales, recycling stations, and even bikes for rent.
Lebuh Bishop, the sport zone
A space dedicated to street soccer, basketball, zumba, bootcamp, fit club and other sports activities, this is where you can burn off the extra calories from all the delicious street food.
Lebuh Gereja, the cultural zone
Enjoy awesome live music and street entertainments. This is also a great spot to start your tour of the historic buildings in the area.
Gat Lebuh Gereja, the play zone
Seeing the game stalls, it’ll be difficult to persuade the kids to leave this zone. Depending on the calendar, there might also be special events so do keep an eye out for their Facebook announcements
