Penang’s Best Ramadan Food Bazaars
It’s no secret Penang is a gastronomic paradise, and that only intensifies during Ramadan. During the holy month special Ramadan food bazaars pop up across Penang. I followed the locals to these “Pasar Ramadans” to get the skinny on what spectacular morsels I should sample at each bazaar. Yes, it’s a tough job but I guess someone has to do it. Here are my findings:
Where? Little India
Biryani, Samosas and Murtabak are hot items at this Indian / Arabic fusion food fair found in the heart of Little India and attended by some of the city’s celebrated restaurants. Stick around for a great selection of heavenly Indian desserts.
Meat and Rice
Where? Bayan Baru Mosque
A popular choice, judging by the crowds, this bazaar is the place to get your fill of rice favourites like Nasi Campur and Nasi Tomato, that flavourful tomato rice dish I find so addictive. But equally as impressive are the huge grills rotating blackened chicken pieces for the delicious spicy coconut dish, Ayam Percik.
Where? Taman Tun Sardon
Hit this car park in the afternoon and indulge in all manner of homemade sweets. My picks were some fresh-made, sugar-sprinkled donuts and a few helpings of cooling coconut jelly.
Where? Jalan Makloom
Now don’t get me wrong, this extensive bazaar cooks up all you need for a complete meal, with meehoon, chicken wings and grilled kebabs of the line-up, but one of the draws here is a drinks stall flaunting vats of multi-coloured thirst-quenchers that draws crowds far and wide. Lines are long but it’s worth the wait!
