Hit the Shops: Penang's Best Places to Spend
I hope you brought an extra suitcase, because Penang offers bargains by the armful. Whether you're shopping for antiques, souvenirs or the latest and greatest must-haves, here are a few of my favourite spots:
Gurney Plaza in Georgetown is the centrepiece mall of the island, with loads of well-established international fashion brands, plus cinema and a selection of beauty and healthcare stores.
Gurney Paragon Mall is an upscale shopping mall occupying a city block between Gurney Drive and Kelawei Road, in Georgetown, Penang.
Queensbay Mall is the largest shopping centre in Penang. It’s a waterfront complex in Bayan Lepas near the airport, minutes away from the Penang Bridge. The mall is home to a variety of restaurants, clothing stores, electronics shops and a cinema.
For those who love exploring the treasures of a jumbled store, Bee Chin Heong will be your idea of heaven. It sells a random assortment of household objects, religious artifacts, furniture and temple supplies and is well worth a look around. A similar curiosity shop is Lean Giap Trading, which stocks porcelain, glass and silverware as well as furniture.
If you're looking for traditional pewter to take home as souvenirs, try Royal Selangor Pewter at one of its many locations around Penang. It has loads of products to choose from and you can even take a pewter-making workshop on site, but you have to book in advance.
Finally, for that true market experience, head to Chowrasta Bazaar with its array of stalls selling fruit, clothes, books and cheap eats.
Are you shopping for your mum, sister, partner, child, colleague...? Simply share your plans with my friendly team and they’ll tell you the best places to try.
