Chinese New Year Festivities in George Town
As if George Town’s multi-cultural mix wasn’t evocative enough, visiting during the Lunar New Year highlights the area’s rich history even more. Locals party up a storm during the Spring Festival from February 8 to 10, which in 2016 ushers in the Year of the Monkey.
If, like me, you share the monkey’s curious and inquisitive traits, I know you’ll want a taste of the action. Events kick off in a spectacular way with the Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. Local and international hot air balloons will join the two-day festival on February 9 and 10. Join the extravaganza for displays, a special “Night Glow” show and free-flying balloons. I can’t wait to float up in a balloon myself. I’ll be looking at Penang from a whole new perspective.
After ballooning, explore George Town’s wide streets during the holiday and, sooner or later, you’ll pass a festive traditional display. Listen out for the distinctive beating of drums and follow that sound. Chances are you’ll hit upon a lion dance put on to celebrate the Spring Festival.
I’ll certainly be making my way across George Town for Chinese New Year in Penang. See you there!
