BODY IMAGE: Hotel Jen Male, Maldives : Talk Like a Local: Getting a Hang of the Slang

It's always helpful to know a few words of the local lingo when you're visiting somewhere new! The national language of the Maldives is Dhivehi, which mixes Sri Lankan with words from all the nationalities that have called the islands home across their history. You might recognise traces of Arabic, French, Persian and English just for starters! Here are a handful of words to get you going:

Assalaa mu alaikum: Hello

Haalu kihineh?: How are you?

Ingey: Okay, I agree

Dho: Right?

Habeys: Awesome

Marhaaba: Welcome

Shukuriya: Thank you

Adheys kohfa: Please

Ma-aaf kurey: Excuse me

Dhanee: Goodbye
