Bazaar Bargains: Where to Shop
Stores of every description are to be found along Malé's two main roads, Majeedhee Magu (which runs east to west), and Chandhanee Magu (north to south). Along Chandhanee Magu you'll find souvenirs, including delicately crafted miniature dhonis, or boats, as well as thundu kuna, or traditional woven mats. A word to the wise: you can't take turtle shells or coral products out of the country even though some stores will try to sell these to you. Head to The Craft Shop on Ameer Ahmed Magu for modern locally made souvenirs, or Najah Art Palace and Souvenirs for more traditional products.
All luxury goods are duty-free in Malé, so make sure you stock up at the airport upon your arrival or departure! In town, Reefside on Chandani Magu carries a respectable variety of international brands, Sonee Sports has you covered for all sporting gear, and Le Cute on Majeedi Magu also offers a swanky shopping experience.
Remember that all shops briefly close for 15 minutes during prayer times, which happen five times a day. It's all part of Malé's unique charm!
