Cheap Eats: On-the-Run Local Favourites
It's time to venture further afield for some delicious surprises in the wider region around Puteri Harbour...
You've simply got to try the local delicacy nasi lemak during your stay! It's fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and local pandan leaves, and it comes with a dazzling array of sides. The best spot is Mana Lagi Nasi Lemak in Taman Perling, which gets busy as soon as it opens its doors at 6pm. They offer a wide variety of side dishes too -- order the beef rendang or sambal chili. You won't regret it!
For an authentic local food experience, head to Meldrum Walk in downtown Johor Bahru. This is where the locals dine on small plastic stools set out on the roadside and where the scents, colours and the sounds of sizzling and chopping fill the air. Try fried carrot cake, satay, tandoori chicken, fried kway teow, or freshly pressed sugar-cane juice. It's a feast for the senses as well as the stomach!
Chua Kee Seafood Restaurant at 1 Jalan Kancang Panjang is an excellent option for a large group and specialises in zi-char, or 'cook and fry' -- the result being generously portioned sharing platters featuring crab, prawns, fish -- plus pork, ribs and chicken wings, too. Make sure you try the lobster crackers.
