New Year’s Eve Fun and Fireworks in Hong Kong
Countdown to 2016 in true Hong Kong style by watching the fireworks! This is one night of the year where anyplace in view of the pyrotechnics is cram packed, as thousands of people crowd sidewalks for a view of the eight-minute spectacular.
I always plan on getting to the area I want to watch from early for dinner – so ask my team to make you reservations ahead of time. After dinner get outside to stake your place. There are viewing points both sides of the harbour, but for ease, go for spots on Central’s harbourfront, which are closest to my hotel.
If you eat at IFC you are in pole position to hit the mall’s rooftop afterwards. The New Year countdown is projected from Hong Kong’s tallest building, the ICC in Kowloon. There is a mixture of bars and public spaces on the roof but check with my staff to see which are ticketed events.
Otherwise, make your way down towards the Central Ferry Piers, which are also a great vantage point. Bars are located at piers 3 and 7 should you find yourself in need of a celebratory drink or two!
For those really in the mood to revel, from here it’s a hop, skip and a jump up to Lan Kwai Fong, site of the year’s biggest New Year’s party. You’ll pay a lump sum to enter most bars and clubs around the main the strip. Dragon-I is your celebrity hangout and Drop will have you getting your dance on…
Ask my team for the best ways to get from my hotel to the fireworks. They have all the inside knowledge on getting you there and back. Still want more ideas on things to do? Go read my One Day City Guide for more inspiration!
