In Search of: The Hong Kong Egg Waffle (Gai Daan Jai)
If this is your first time to Hong Kong, you might not have heard of the oh-so-delicious street snack that is Gai Daan Jai (literally “little chicken eggs”). It looks like a golden egg-shaped piece of bubble wrap and is made from only a handful of simple ingredients – flour, eggs and sugar. Sceptical? Wait till you sink your teeth into these fluffy egg waffles.
In my quest to find a delicious Gai Daan Jai in Hong Kong, here are three shops that live up to their reputation:
Lee Keung Kee North Point Egg Waffles
Whenever you ask a local where to get good egg waffles in town, they will almost always say “that shop in North Point”. Starting out in Kwun Tong more than 30 years ago, Mr Liu now heads an egg waffle empire with several branches around Hong Kong.
Main branch, 492 King’s Road, North Point.
Hung Kee Top Quality Egg Waffles
Gai Daan Jai maker Mr Lai is so confident of his recipe that he’ll let you taste the product before you buy. I bit into a crispy outer shell while the inside was light and fluffy. Try it out and you be the judge!
Shop A34C, second corridor, Tai On Building, Sai Wan Ho
Proprietor Mrs Chan says her egg waffles give her a nostalgic “mammy” feeling about growing in Ngau Tau Kok. She also loves chocolate and incorporates bittersweet cocoa morsels into her popular recipe.
