PENANG, MALAYSIA – July 2, 2018 – Hotel Jen Penang will transition towards phasing out single use plastics by beginning with the ban on plastic straws in its operations from July 1, 2018, joining the global fight against plastic, ahead of the World No Plastic campaigns in July.

This is the latest series of green initiatives at the hotel, such as offering variety of superb beverages and cocktails without the need to use a straw in an aim to cut waste, which also encourages guests to do their bit.

Plastic straws will be replaced with biodegradable paper straws, which will only be served upon request where possible.

Say “No Straw” Please

This is the first step in the hotel’s approach to moving away from single-use plastics, including food and drink packaging, through reduction, and will be replaced with sustainable alternatives and increased recycling.

The hotel’s sales & marketing team will join the effort and encourage event organisers to embrace sustainable living by offering alternatives to reduce single-use plastic and go green throughout the meetings or events held at Hotel Jen Penang.

“We recognise the long-term detrimental impact on the environment and society at large. We believe we have the responsibility and have committed to making a difference in Penang by reducing the environmental impact of plastic waste.”

Wong Yaw Ling, area CSR and sustainability manager, said, “We are pleased to be able to join the global effort in helping the environment and reducing our plastic footprint. The issues of plastic pollution are incredibly alarming around the globe and, by practicing sustainability, we hope to drive awareness and social change together with our colleagues and guests.”

The ‘Say “No Straw” Please’ campaign is in line with Shangri-La’s key strategies to achieve excellence, to be committed to the environment through corporate social responsibility. The hotel is proud to stand with the state’s mission on ‘Cleaner and Greener Penang’ and can expect to create a cleaner environment that will be beneficial for Penangites and, most of all, the beautiful beach.

Hotel Jen Penang is the first four-star international chain hotel in Penang to announce on the ban of plastic straw.
