PENANG, MALAYSIA – March 27, 2018 – Hotel Jen Penang recently kicked off its brand campaign – Jen-Why Art, a programme aimed at introducing travellers to local talents through art, creative format and engagement activities. Travellers can discover the local culture and art of Baba and Nyonya (Peranakan heritage) through the exhibition with the theme “All About Penang Nyonya Culture & Art” by local talent Kenny Loh.

The two-month-long exhibition will be available on selected weekends and accompanied with workshops for those interested to learn about Nyonya crafts and food.

Guests can expect more than 50 paintings, hand-made collectibles and prints with Penang Baba-and-Nyonya-inspired theme. They can find traditional kebaya, sarong and beaded shoes here, as well.

All About Penang Nyonya Culture & Art by Baba Kenny 

Penang-born talent Kenny Loh is a self-learned artist dedicated in Baba Nyonya-inspired crafts, designs and paintings.

This is Kenny’s first solo art exhibition and partnership with Hotel Jen Penang by Shangri-La. Kenny is passionate about bringing this unique traditional culture and art to life to Penangites and guests staying at Hotel Jen Penang.

“I hope such experiential programmes will inspire new blood, new creative talents in Penang,” said Kenny.

The exhibition opens from 10:30 am to 5 pm on weekends, (April 7, 8, 14 and 15, 2018) and refreshments will be provided. A total of 30% of the sales from the paintings will benefit Special Children’s Centre Penang, the hotel’s EMBRACE partner and a committed project in which hotel supports and gives back to the community.

Kenny will offer two workshops from 10:30 am to 12 noon, as follows:

  • Learn to Make Butterfly Pea Flower and Barley Drink on April 7 & 8, 2018
  • DIY: Miniature Clay Fridge Magnet – Red Tortoise Cake on April 14, 2018
  • M$25 nett per person

All materials will be provided. Registration is open to the public and seating will be on a first-come, first served basis.
