Hotel Jen Brisbane

Welcome to Brisbane, Australia’s third-largest city and the crown jewel of Queensland! Lucky for you, my hotel is set smack dab in the middle of this vibrant yet laid back city. Upon arrival, the first thing you’ll notice is that there is an unmistakable flow here. Not just because of the nearby Brisbane River, but also the many lanes to be discovered right outside of your room. Don’t be afraid to get off the beaten path as one of the best ways to become acquainted with Brisbane is to wander freely.

Art by homegrown artists can be found at every corner in Downtown Brisbane, from beneath the elevated highway down to the electrical boxes and quirky stickers plastered on street lights. Lane-way culture, the art of packing as much entertainment into compact city side streets, is making its mark in this neighborhood. Over in Fortitude Valley, areas like Bakery and Winn lanes are fast becoming favorites among the local and tourist populace. Together with the Valley’s eclectic mix of gritty art, upscale boutiques, and craft bars, you’ll leave here with an experience worth preserving on memory lane.

For a more leisurely approach to Brisbane, I’d suggest taking a stroll through Roma Street Parklands. It’s a great picnic spot and is right across from Hotel Jen. The weekend markets at the City Botanic Gardens, Boundary Street and Milton area, all within 10 minutes by car from the hotel, however, are where you want to be to be immersed in the city’s multisensorial vibe. Pick up everything from fresh produce to works of arts and craft all while discovering another side of a newly burgeoning Brisbane.

Sports and music fans might enjoy a visit to Caxton Street, next to the Suncorp Stadium which is around 15 minutes on foot from the hotel. If you’ve scored tickets to a Suncorp Stadium event while visiting then it is important to note the pre-game ritual: Kick off the event in true Aussie fashion and head over to Caxton Street for a bite and a pint.

For an end-of-day treat, I have two suggestions for some of the best views in Brisbane. The first is viewing a sunset from Kurilpa or Victoria bridges. Both offer a great vantage point over the Brisbane River, along which people are biking, walking and jogging. Enjoy the full scope of South Bank and central business district all from one panoramic setting. Alternatively, hop onto a free ferry plying the river and head to Kangaroo Point. Here you’ve got the best seat on the water to take in the full view of the city. The meandering sun brings to light a kaleidoscopic burst of colour as the cityscape before you transforms.

So there you have it, a day out and about in Brisbane. There is no need to rush it, however, because Brisbane is a walkable city to explore at leisure. But if you’re ever at a loss for what to do next just follow the river and lanes. They’re the arteries that connect visitors to the lifeblood of this city, and they’re sure to lead you on a journey that ends in discovering something new.
