To be a Singaporean is to love food. I’ve never met a single Singaporean who doesn’t in some way define his culture through his favourite fare. In Singapore’s early days as a city, migrants took to the streets, selling food far and wide, feeding the hungry mouths of a developing nation. Today, hawkers can be found all over the place, namely in shop spaces where they sell the product of generations of fusion cuisine.

I tracked down a few of my favourite street snacks and insider spots!

Char Kway Teow stir-fried noodles are best sampled at Zion Road Riverside Food Centre. For the tastiest Chicken Rice, head to Tian Tian Hainanese at Maxwell Market. Who doesn’t love laksa? Laksa at 328 Katong Laksa on 51 East Coast Road is a highlight. Try the Chilli Crab at Jumbo Seafood Restaurant on Blk 1206 East Coast Parkway or head to any small local coffee shop to sample the local favourite, Kaya Toast.
